Grounding does have a lot to do with lighting surges and other strange voltage and NEC does require bonding along with local and state. Grounding will not redirect lighting are surges but the goal is to keep everything the same potential therefore no current will flow. Also not being bonded properly is a safety hazard for workings and home owners. The bottom line is I do not think she knew what she was talking about. I agree that grounding doesn't prevent but it covers your ass because you can be sued it your not.
Just today I had a Trailer House with a hot frame and I almost screwed up. I am glad I didn't become the ground are it would have been tell my loved ones was goodbye
