Many hold up to $2000 so feel fortunate. I have even seen $5000 retainers. Point of fact though, if it is not in your contract they have no legal point to stand on until they have you sign on the line that would verify you agree to this practice. There are many out there that later try to take your retainer so beware if you are dealing with any of the bastards on my bad company list.
