"A formidable army can be a great deterrent to war. A formidable army can also bring it's enemys to its knees without firing a shot. Say a show of force never seen before with no where to run."
All of the things you listed would fall under defending what is theirs or waging war, wouldn't they? Weather you fire a shot or not facing off against an enemy is a act of war.
Where is the love and free will in any of the above reasons?
I believe Jason is right about having a formidable army and the enemy using guerrilla warfare. Its been used for centuries, when war through attrition is not feasible. The Thirteen Colonies did it against England, the Vietcong did it against the French and later the USA, and the Taliban are doing it against everyone they feel is against them. This style of warfare is vary effective because it costs the occupying force money, troops and materials to support their efforts to stay where they are and try to win. It's vary hard to fight because it a fluid style of warfare. Did you ever see how just one sniper can stop a whole company? Don't get to much more guerrilla than that.
But none of this answers my question/s why would God need or have a army?
