What is the model of the amplifier? The older flex nets (700 and 800 series) did have external bi-directional testpoints that caused some issues. Even so, there should be an internal balancing test point that is directional and gives a solid reading. The newer 1 Ghz models (900 series) still have the internal balancing test point, but also any external test points are now directional.
If it is a really old model (big 8 port housing) there are two test points side by side on the back of the housing on the trunk output side. One is the fwd out and the other is a rev input You need to terminate the rev in test point (head end term will work) when measuring the fwd out or it will be off by up to 5 db. Also, one these housings, look at the seizure screws. If they are slotted screws it is a -20db test point. If it is phillips, it is -25db (1 ghz rated housing).
