Every home is a different situation. Some houses has too much signal and some has not enough. You really need to play it the best you can. By using splitters, you can trick the modem to see the proper signal. Its not advisable if you can get away with it. Just remember your modem should see +8 to -8 for your forward and in the area of 37 to 50 for return. Your downstream snr should be in the high 30s to low 40s and your upstream should be around high 20s to low 30s.
In a perfect world, your modem line should be off the first split on the 3.5db down leg. There is times were you have to put a splitter inside because the customers tv and modem are in the same room. If everything macthes up, you should be fine. The trainers are not always correct and a few of them will try to show you shortcuts that will end up getting you in trouble.
