The reason that it may "Sound" that way to you, and many others I am sure, is way too many people put their trust in "Money".
Good Sky asked you what the most important things in your life are, and said that those things are your "god" and to many the most important thing in life is money.
The first of the 10 commandment is "You shall have no other gods before me." and so many people put the "Almighty Dollar" ahead of their god. (which makes money their god)
They put way too much trust in how much money they have, (or worry about how much they need) rather than putting trust in the One who promises to take care of them.
Matthew 7: 9-11
Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
It is not about "paying God off" it is about building your faith that it is God, rather then money that provides us with our every need.
Why do you think that it is printed on our currency, "In God we Trust" (?)
Probably as a reminder to all that it is God, rather than money that we need to place our trust.
Matthew 6:24
No-one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
