All depends on WHERE on the steel toe the force is applied. If it is the edge closest to the foot itself, it will collapse. if it is toward the front, that is where the best protection lies. I heard many scare stories about T-40's and dump trucks and such by those that just didn't want to wear them. Gaffing is not a prerequisite to the wearing of steel toe boots. I myself wear steel toe for hooking but for everything else as well, and I can't count how many times they have protected me. My current boots are steel toe and they aren't uncomfortable at all and diabetes would not be an issue in wearing these compared to non steel toe.
Steel toe IS an OSHA requirement...for certain jobs. Shit happens, why would'nt you want to do everything you can to be sure you have all your appendages at the end of the day?
