I was working on Kadena Air Base on Okinawa when 9-11 happened. We were off because of a typhoon. They gave the all clear around 14:00 and our sup. told us to come in...we tried, but that base like the rest were locked down tighter than a snare drum, in the coming weeks it got so bad that you had to stop and the gate guard would call the shop and confirm that you actually had work on the respective base, keep in mind with all the housing areas at the time that was quite a few locations. On the Marine bases in particular you could not park within 50' of a barracks. So you had to hump everything up to the 4th floor to do a job. Worse were the towers, 9 stories and no elevator. Glad those days are over.
