This is actually an easy one to fix. Go directly to the labor board in your state and file a complaint. They will contact your former employer and set up an interview between you and them (labor deputy) and your employer.
They will undoubtably decide in your favor and order your former employer to pay. If does not pay within the established time issued by the state he will be subject to increased fines (per day) that go directly to you.
