If you're determined to track down sources of impulse, along with actual measurements, look at the equipment on these sites:

We track impulse just like any other form of ingress. Once you get to a location where it seems to be coming from everywhere, you're in the right area. Break out your AM radio, or the RFI detectors and start going pole to pole.I found that areas that have poorly grounded power distribution (copper thieves cutting electrodes off the poles)alaong with faulty lightning arrestors to be the main causes. Loose and faulty powerline connection hardware is another issue.Get in touch with your power co. RFI technician, we have ours via phone and email. He just got a nasty one fixed for me, a bad lightning arrestor at a dead-end location.
