I think the end will be the same. They (Comcast, Verizon, Directv, The U.S. Postal Service. General Motors) find that they have promised future earnings or retirement funds in exchange for present cooperation. As things change they have to dump people and those pesky obligations.
If you would just adapt to the new reality...share an apartment with several families and generations, get by on one car and never see a doctor again you will be fine with the modern compensation package.
