6 weeks seems plenty of time to QC any work and notify the contractor with any deficiencies. If he has not been notified as to why he has not been paid, it is practical to file paperwork accordingly.
I don't know anything about these specific companies, but, there are way to many companies out there who will avoid paying what is owed by whatever means. The more frequently people take control of their situations and make the companies accountable for their actions, the less lekely it will be for them to continue to take advantage of the situation.
Gotta put some fear into those that won't honor their contracts.
