I doubt our friend who put a GR in a trench due to rocky conditions went 30 inches deep...sounds like he did it with a shovel, certainly no 30 inches deep.....more like a slit trench.....as fas as NEC, you are correct with the quote, but in reality, how many people use your exaple quote? NONE! and in 31 yrs I have never seen a 10' or more spec...normally 8 ft copper clad is the requirement....We can all quote the book, but reality is usually different.....And the inspector only enforces what the customer wants.....just my opinion and humble experiences.........
