First you have to define what "good" is, and since that is based on God's standards, one must rely on God's Word to set the parameters, otherwise we are left to what is right in our own eyes, and that is exactly what led man away from God over and over and over, doing what was right in their own eyes. I personally do not feel that a man can live a good life and go to heaven, because if that were possible, Christ died for nothing. Man does not have the capability to not commit sin as we have an inherit sin nature. Once sin entered this world, that was all she wrote. But thankfully, God provided a way of salvation that is available to anyone who wishes to receive it. A gift is not a gift until the recipient accepts it. So it is with salvation. It is God's unconditional love for us that led to salvation, not us being good. I am very tempted to quote scripture here, but since you asked that it be in our words, I'll refrain.
