I've worked around knob and tube since before my cable days, and still do. It's actually the best electrical service you can get if used in conjunction with a fuse box. If it's in a circuit breaker box you have a problem. Fuses sense heat and act accordingly, one of the reasons it gets a bad rap is because they used to solder the connections and the solder would overheat and cause fires.
Most of the houses in my service area have this system still in use, including parts of my own house and have no problems. We're in the Philadelphia area and almost all of the older houses still use at least a little bit of it.
