If your pulling from the attic down to next floor, i always gauge by the recepticle that the tv is plugged into. Go into attic and find the electrical lines that are feeding the outlet by tv, drill thru top plate beside electrical lines, give yourself 4-6 inches one side or the other. I cut a small 2'' by 2'' whole in drywall on one side of the recepticle and drill to that side in attic. I don't use glow rods or any of the other devices since inside walls are usually hollow, i just feed cable down wall, go down and pull cable out thru hole and add wallplate. This is the simple example just to give you an idea. There are so many variables that its impossible to go thru them all. If from basement up to first floor, same concept basically. i know guys are gonna eat me alive, but i never had a problem other than sometimes it takes some time to get cable to the hole in the drywall.
