The problem is not that the company is on their own side. Rather, the problem is that the company uses their position to generate loyalty;do one for the team...one hand washes the other etc.
But when a subcontractor splits with the money or there is a damage claim....we do not involve ourselves in on going investigations.
Techs who state they cannot bid on or be profitable with a project for the money offered...or object to safety issues...get jammed.
Often new hires are not informed they are or will be treated as contractors. Their right to refuse work or their responsibility for employment costs are not explained. They think they are employees.
