PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP --Sheriff's deputies say a Comcast Cable Company worker was conscious today when he was transported to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital after his ladder toppled on the job and he fell several feet to the ground below.

Sgt. Eric Rakow said the worker, identified only as a 42-year-old Comstock Park man, appeared to have a broken arm and complained of stomach pains, but was talking as medical workers loaded him into an ambulance. Deputies believe his injuries were non life-threatening.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene at 2:52 p.m. after a call came in from two Comcast employees who were working on cable lines in the 4800 block of Coit Avenue NE. The two were standing on ladders leaned against poles on opposite sides of the road. One of the poles, which was standing on a hill, snapped out of the ground and toppled into the roadway. Police said the worker's ladder went down with it. His partner called 911.

A new homeowner in the 4800 block of Coit said she had requested Comcast workers to come out to activate her telephone and cable services. The woman and her children were sitting in their living room with the windows open when they heard a commotion outside and one of the men calling for help. The woman said several cars pulled over and neighbors came out to assist the injured worker until police arrived.

Deputies say the man was wearing a hard hat and safety harness at the time of the accident.
