Depends on the area. I go to Expedia, see what's available, then check individual websites, then call the hotel directly. Use AAA, corporate, long term, & every hotel rewards card there is. Most chain motels know a bird in the hand theory, & will work on rates to have the room full. Found better rates at Holiday Inns (suites) than Ma & Pa joints before. Breakfast, micro, fridge, etc are factors when looking at the big picture. We avoid places ran by middle-easterners, they are generally rude, ungrateful, & the place usually smells. Right now we're having great luck with the America's Best Value Inn that we're at. As far as the maids, a lot of the time if you opt out of maid service, they will give you a better rate. 20 years ago, it cost an average of $13 a room to clean. I don't want anyone in my room anyhoo.
