2. Ixtoc 1 Oil Spill - June 3, 1979 - March 23, 1980
Location: Bay of Campeche off Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico
Amount of Oil Spilled: 140 million gallons
This oil spill didn't involve a tanker, but rather an offshore oil well. Pemex, a state-owned Mexican petroleum company was drilling an oil well when a blowout occurred. The oil ignited causing the drilling rig to collapse. Oil began gushing out of the well into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of 10,000 to 30,000 barrels a day for almost an entire year beforeworkers were finally able to cap the well and stop the leak.
This spill reached the Texas/La coast granted it was 31 years ago but it took nearly a year to stop it, this also occured in 150 feet of water, from what I understand it happened in eerily similar fashion to horizon they had to cap and drill a relief well there as well
Speed I am sorry your business is in the dumps as a result of this man made error I too am losing a ton of money as a result, you see I am part owner in 2 shrimp trawlers and if they don't work I can't make my payment and no payment means I may lose everything, this investment seemed more sound than the stock market now I'm not so sure we'll see if I wind up losing the boats and possibly my house
And all I was saying is by boycotting the stations your'e not hurting BP you aare hurting the store owner, the store clerk, the various suppliers who service that store and thier support personnel, the whole-salers and so on, check out the carbon footprint of a snickers bar.....
