If you are new and not yet seasoned or comfortable knocking doors, better to get out as early as you can, at least no later than 1.  Of course most sales are made between 3-8, when more people are home, but there are a few reasons for getting out there early.

1) Nothings better for your confidence or paycheck than having one or two sales already under your belt by prime time.

2) There is a psychology to working turf and working your territory correctly.  Some people just don't open their doors, especially if its in the middle of the day and no one is around in their driveways are in their front yards, they simply don't feel safe.  However as you make your rounds, and the little old ladies peeking out their windows get used to seeing you, they get more comfortable with your presence in the neighborhood. This is why many managers advice knocking the same door 3 different times.  The earlier you get out there, the more people will see you and come to accept you as their "neighborhood cable representative"

3) Subsequently, this is why it is important to stay in your turf and thoroughly work it for a few days.  By the third or fourth day, people will more easily open doors for you, since they are used to seeing you on their street and talking to their neighbors.
