Both...However Harry Truman made probably the biggest decision ever made by an American president to use the "Atomic". The devastation "unleashed" on human life that "man" could wipe out life on Earth was realized, thus the cold war.
Know one will ever know if President Truman choose not to use the "Atomic" if it would have been used by another, my guess it would have.
So did America's use of the 'Atomic" preserve freedom for the world....I am sure there are thousands of scenario's that could have been played out. However I do know that the this terrible "Invention of man" has never been used since August 6, 1945.
God rest the souls of the 220,000 people killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
