The only way that scam could work was if the front desk clerk was in on it, because the front desk would have to give out the 16 digit card number (Visa,M/C,Discover) or 15 digit (american express) along with the 4 digit expiration date and billing address zip-code.
The reason behind the cvc on the back of card is to prove card in hand when purchasing something online, you should never have to give anybody your cvc number
If you are purchasing something online and they ask for the cvc just call the customer service number and tell them you want to do a manual entry purchase
If they say you can't, hang up on them and look elsewhere.
Tell them that you want them to do a manual entry on a CC Data Terminal that does not require a ccv and that you want the approval number that the terminal
sends back from the card processing company, the federal trade commission requires that any company that processes credit cards for any reason, to have at least 1 manual entry data terminal on location.
I had a situation just the other day I get a phone call from a women that said she was the wife of a person that rented a villa from me that left a $500.00 deposit and that they had to cancel the reservation and needed the refund back.
She had the correct dates, husband's name, mailing address, everything correct, except...the credit card number that he made the reservation with! "warning #1"
She told me that their bank had changed names and re-issued them a new card, and the old card has been canceled, I told her to have her husband call me
I know his voice over the phone because he has been coming here for many years, she said he's out of town working on a job because he got laid off here.. "warning #2"
(The man owns a cadillac/GM Body Repair shop attached to one of the largest SW Florida cadillac/GMC Dealers in naples, Florida)
So I run his old card number for $1.00 authorization and if it was canceled it would have declined... It was approved.. so I call my buddy up and he answers and I gave him the low down, well it is his soon to be ex wife trying to mess up all of his business & personal affairs
We laughed and chatted a bit and he asked me for the card number she gave me, I said sure, while we were on the phone he ran a $10,000.00 authorization hold on her card, and said hold approved, well he said that will eat at least $10,000.00 of her credit line, He said he won't get a penny from the hold but it will reduce her credit line that amount untill he releases the credit hold.
He said I will see you in July for the mini-dive and to expect the usual bottle of Patron Gran Platinum Tequila, because again you made my vacation all that much better
