Shit, you sure as hell don't see that for football games, or baseball games, or Nascar etc...and one does not need to "salute" but the right hand over ones heart shows the same respect. I don't think that is too much to ask for. I worked at an amusement park for a couple of years and was in charge of the audio for the national anthem, and I would get so pissed off how many patrons would not bother to cover their heart, but even worse were the assholes still walking around, looking at the park directory and talking loudly. You are fortunate to have experienced the comodry you did.
