It's 100% legal in California, I remember a company out there that sold a unit called a Turbonique it was a 5th member bolt-in on the dana housings
1500 to 3000 hp of instant power, back in the 70's I watched a corvette funny car do a 1/4 mile in 4.2sec@ 321mph off of a fifth member motor
had 700 pounds of lead in the front where the engine should be and he smoked the tires the whole 1/4 mile run, 100 foot of blue & yellow flame all the way
and the power unit weighed 75lbs, just a 6" pipe sticking 3" out past the back bumper, sounded like the shuttle launching, and It was a CDOT approved unit
because it was a low carbon unit and contained no bulk oil storage, the company even sold a exhaust adapter that directed the exhaust downwards.
but after many people were singed, maimed, died because of un controllable power the CDOT re certified them for closed course race event only
the unit ran off of two tanks, one was kerosene and the other was hydrogen peroxide, sounds like a rocket motor to me
it only had a off-on switch under the gas pedal, full power, no power, must have been a rush to drive
check the company out, they still sell them, back in the 70's the motor coasted around $60K but for 3K of horse power at a push of a button awesome
