So I'm working a subdivision with sporadic receive MER issues. On one run in particular, EOL houses are showing low MER levels (from 22-25). Here's what I found:
3rd amp in cascade measured 28.9 upstream MER at input test point, 28.1 MER at output test point. Upstream MER levels at the homes being fed by 1st and 2nd amps in cascade show 29's and 30's, so I know there are no problems there.
1) Swapped the mod just in case: no change
2) Backed up to 2nd amp in cascade, 30.1 upstream MER at output test point.
3) Pulled out the DSAM and referenced the forward sweep at that amp.
4) 20 tap showed no problems in the sweep picture.
5) 17 tap had issues: losing 10 dB over 150' and of course sweep picture showed the same
6) jumped off that span with RG-11 temp.
7) Went back to the original amp (3rd in cascade with the 28.1 MER at ouput), checked my MER levels again at the output test point to see how much I fixed the problem...
AND I'LL BE DAMNED IF MY CMTS RECEIVE MER NOW MEASURED 24.6!
I packed it up for the night and said f$^% it.
Why people? Whyyyyyyy?!!!!!!!!!!
CMTS receive MER
