More than likely the tree was just barely in the way, allowing some signal to come through, but may have been blocking a few transponders, I have had that happen before, and just trimming the tree solved it:  But that is just a band aid, unfortunately, tree's grow back, and you still have the problem, which will cause a trouble call.  When band aids come off, they sting.
