The TV part of CATV may die off someday but the CABLE/BROADBAND industry is too in-trenched in America to ever go away. Until they come up with a replacement for fiber it will always be around in some form. Cable companies have more fiber hung and in the ground than anyone and have even out built the phone giants. With new developments like light wave multiplexing that will allow cable companies to send different light wavelengths on a single fiber at the same time thus increasing the amount of information that can be passed. Some day each node in a system will have its on wavelength assigned to it and it could be possible to even assign each subscriber their own with FTTP.
Whoever wrote the above article is vary one-sided and is not taking into account new technical breakthroughs. If it were not for the cable companies there would not be such a thing as broadband.
