Lost my mother when I had just turned 18. The best advice I can offer is for you to let it be known that you are there for him, no matter what. All I had was my mother. When she left me, my father didn't know how to deal with it beyond being the asshole he had always been, and my older sisters had their own lives already and moved out way earlier. I was the one who was home with her, I was the one that took care of her, I was the one who discovered she had died.
