You have auto insurance to protect yourself from paying out of pocket expenses when you cause damage to others through a wreck.
You carry health insurance to protect yourself from paying 100% of the expenses when you get sick. You also carry health insurance to protect all other americans from paying your expenses when you get sick through higher healthcare costs, and higher insurance premiums.
