The law states that you have to have auto insurance to protect yourself from liability. If you are at fault in a car accident, you are legally responsible for damages. If you don't have insurance, you can be sued for damages. Having auto liability insurance doesn't protect the other guy, it protects you. Having uninsured/under insured coverage protects you in the event some one crashes into you who doesn't have auto insurance.
All americans are paying higher healthcare costs and higher health insurance premiums right now as a result of people who don't have insurance that hold off of seeing a doctor for routine care because they can't afford it. They wait until they get so sick and have to go to the hospital for treatment. They can't pay for it, so they either file bankruptcy, or don't even bother with the bills. Since these people aren't paying, that leaves the doctors and hospitals with little choice but to raise the prices that they charge to recoup those losses, and that leaves the rest of americans forced to pay a higher cost for health care.
With every one having insurance, the above scenario pretty much disappears, which in turn will bring down the cost of health care.
