We have them in our trucks and what we found was surprising to the extent of abuse. From a company perspective they limit waste and abuse of the most expensive asset we issue to our employees. We have had guys leave their trucks on all day to keep them hot or cold depending on the season. We have had many speed alerts that we set at a margin over the existing speed limit. We get those callers that say our truck was speeding and reckless via the "How's my driving" stickers on the back of the truck. The GPS helps to determine "how true" some of the claims are. We are also able to determine locations of guys in certain areas that might be able to assist a tech on a bigger job or pick up a job or equipment from another tech for whatever reason. We are able to determine when a tech was there and send a screenshot to the cable company to prove that you were there while the customer is on the line with customer service telling them they have been waiting all day!
Anyone who works with us will tell you that we do not find ways to beat up techs but hopefully this is looked upon as another tool to help on many different levels. The bottom line is if you don't feel comfortable you don't have to work here. We are able to limit waste, damage, accidents, and repairs to the most expensive piece of equipment we supply. And if we can maintain those expenses and minimize out overhead then we can hopefully pay out a higher rate to the techs and get better quality. The bottom line is we are trying to manage our business in every way possible to give us the best opportunity to continue working in this industry. Everyone knows some tech that has done something stupid with a company vehicle at one point or another. We are just trying to manage our equipment to the best of our ability in an effort to maintain the value of the vehicle and driver inside. This is my perspective from the management side.
