It's not about limiting liability at all, or at least my liability. There are enough places on the Internet where anyone can post whatever they want about anyone. Go to Craigslist and you'll find all the crap you ever wanted to see. There's no need for this forum to be yet another of those sites. I try, take great pains in fact, to make this forum something more relevant.
This guy "John Wilson" never contributed anything monetarily to this site yet was allowed to post negative things about several companies that have. Jason Smythe has placed many employment ads here. John Wilson was allowed to post what appeared at the time to be a truthful statement about his experience with Mr. Smythe. John Wilson wasn't interested in relating an honest experience, though. He wanted revenge for some perceived wrong and tried to use this forum to that end through continued harassment. That isn't allowed. Mr. Smythe never complained about the post to me, and in fact posted his response on the thread for all to see. I give credit to him for that as anyone viewing the thread should. Mr. Wilson, on the other hand, became abusive to this site and came under a new name to make false claims about his treatement by this site. This just shows why I have to be more strict about what gets posted and by whom.
In most cases if a person has an established account, he will be allowed to post a reasonable statement about his experience regardless of whether or not he has ever contributed anything to this site and whether or not the company he posted about has ever paid for an advertisement. I think that's more than fair policy. Not everyone will be treated equally, though. By that I mean we will look closely at the account history. What will be allowed for one account may not be allowed for someone else. Someone who has been a member forever, frequently posts yet never complains about anything, and is/has been a paid member -- he is going to be given far, far more leeway than someone with the opposite history. It isn't a scientific formula and requires a judgment that we must make. Not everyone is going to agree and when they feel slighted will assume it's because we are protecting advertisers. That's simply false.
