Noise suppresion

we are having problems with noise in are return band, mainly in retro nodes.we have found bad cable, poor craftmanship,and loose drop term... we still seem to be getting no where fast, does any one know a way to get a true upstream SNR reading from in the field??? any advice or if you have run into this problem and could tell me how you fixed the problem would be thankful.
