i use hp 8591c, i goto reciever in headend, put meter on peak hold, let it fill out, use the markers to determine SNR,(signal to floor), my dsam 6000 with built in cable modem will do a autotest that shows you MER\BER rate and also monitors dropped packets using a packet test..
