If I was a betting man and I am, I say when you got your sonde hot over the summer you messed it up. I have seen them get hot enough to make them not work right and have been able to get those refurbished. One question you say you didn't have water, I hope you mean that your head was stopped up and that you weren't crazy enough to be drilling without water all together. I wouldn't normally ask such a dumb question but with what you're willing to work for you can't be for sure! Also WeeWah is dead on you should calibrate before each use and we always would use a couple of pennies to keep the sonde in tight, if its moving around in the head that would also do some of the things your speaking of.
