Actually, Mass is an Independent state. The majority of voters in Mass are Independent. Dems have had their support and lost it in this election. Maine is also a heavy Blue state. Maine has 2 Republican Senators.
Theres no doubt tonight sucks for the Dems. But all they have to do is compromise with 1 GOP Senator, if they wanna go that route. Brown said it best when he said every Republican is the 41st republican. When your problem is that 59 of the 100 Senators are caucusing with your party, thats a problem any party would love to have. Sometimes I think people forget how rare it is to have a super majority. Bills get passed all the time without having a super majority.
Dems can still easily pass Senate bills through the bbudget reconciliation process. Much of the Dem base have been saying this was the route they should have taken in the 1st place, since the GOP did it a few times under Bush.
If they do decide to bargain again with the GOP on healthcare, they will have one big bargaining chip if the GOP tries to stall and not really bargain. Dems can simply pass the senate version, and later make changes to the Senate version via budget Reconciliation. Dems have many options. But, IMO, they've got to be much more effective on addressing the myths put out by the GOP.
I still can't see how a long time Mass citizen could call Schilling a Yankee's fan. WTF!?!? Thats like a Chicagoan saying MJ was a Pistons fan.
