The majority of people’s intentions the closer in time to a tragedy occurring are mostly good. Although there will always be humans that take negative advantage of the situation and you’ll unfortunately always hear about quite clever scams, most humans have empathy. Take the responses in this forum for example, it seems most of us are truly concerned for the victims and hope they find more survivors.
As time progresses and the priority of saving lives has given way to rebuilding, then you will see more business interest and opportunity come into play. With this situation in Haiti, the majority of money will be spent on rescue efforts in the beginning, and then I don’t think you will see much more money pour into the country. Without delving too much into history and the politics of Haiti, there aren’t too many natural resources left to really peak the interest of foreign investing or governments.
The people of Haiti live in squalor and pretty miserable conditions, whether it’s by their own hand or others, however now is not the time for our judgment, but for our humanitarian efforts. The Red Cross text is easy enough and we all know that money will be put towards the rescue effort and help save lives.
