Re: Out of the Industry after 24 Yrs.

I used the CATV industry for everything I could get out of it. Don't get me wrong I loved and still love the work, but its not like it used to be. As my father taught me most jobs the more you know the more you can expect to make. In-between installs and service, construction and splicing, headends and sweep, I took all the NCTI courses I could along with a few collage courses when time permitted. Doing that it allowed me to get into a good gig that pays me not only for what I do but what I know. With the way this industry is changing and the speed its changing at the only way to consistently make good money and not work for crooks, shysters, and conmen is education.
As I read on this site more and more the oldschool guy's are becoming fewer and fewer. MSO's and Primes are finding younger and less experienced workers that will work for less and less just to get the job. The day's of miles and miles of 400' spans and clear running are over, the brotherhood that we all share is there but it's not like it once was. Was a time you could trust the guy's on your crew with your wallet, and your life, but not your wife. Today a lot of the younger guy's I meet I wouldn't trust with a cup of coffee let alone a coring tool and bending board.
If your fed up with the industry than your doing yourself a favor by getting out. As I said before I still love it, but have changed with it and will continue to do so. Just started studying for my RCDD certification, after I wrap that one up I'll pick up my OSP cert. Both of I have years of experience doing but that little piece of paper that says I know how to do it sure adds to the pay check.
If everyone is thinking alike, someone isn't thinking.
