The Gov. is going to put a big screen & computer in every household
1: United States (UN) Military: Currently there is already a large UN force in Haiti. All we need to do is expand this force. One Airborne Brigade should do the trick.
This brigade will fan out and set up tent cities. These tent cities will have basic sleeping arrangements as well as free food and medical facilities. This will allow those in need to eat, sleep, and get medical care all in the safety and security of a guarded refugee camp. This will also provide valuable experience for our Military as a quick reaction force. We could have boots on the ground by this weekend.
2: Rebuilding: Currently the United States government is putting unemployment numbers at around 15 Million people. President Obama has pledged millions of dollars towards relief. Much of that money would be better spent on the American people. But, How??? Right this very second, I know of a place that can use some skilled construction workers. Instead of handing the money to the Haitian government with a “good luck”, hire on some of those in America who are sincerely looking for jobs. Put out a big friggen ad saying “Massive construction project: All skills needed”. Pay these workers a fair wage. I bet the United States would spend less in labor and materials then it would by just giving money away. Americans will have jobs (if only temporary), buildings will be built to some kind of code, and everyone wins.
3: Housing: Obviously, sending a million construction workers overseas to a disaster area presents a new set of problems. Where are they going to live? Again, the answer is right in our face. Currently, FEMA is selling an untold number of trailers. Instead of selling these, why not ship them over to Haiti for these construction workers? The trailers can be easily moved from place to place with the workers and they will be put to a good use.
4: Silver lining: Even on its best day, Haiti is not much better than a third-world country. We can take this opportunity to make improvements. As long as the streets are destroyed, let’s run new water and power lines. Let’s make parks where it is illegal to remove the trees. Let’s make it a more desirable place for the Haitians to live so that they will stop coming to our shores.
