A Day in Court
Salvation is like the story of a man who owed such an incredible debt that he knew there was no possible way to pay it off, even if he lived a thousand years.
One day while walking down the street, another man tapped him on the shoulder and said 'I know you don't know me, but I know you. And I know you own a debt you can not possibly pay, however, I have the means and the desire to pay this debt for you. I have my check book here and I have already written the check, all you need to do is take and deposit it and its yours.'
But the first man refused the offer saying 'No thank you, I still think I can do it if I just try a little harder and work a little longer. Besides, I don't want to owe you anything so I'll just do it myself.'
The second man walked a way with tears in his eyes, for he knew something the first man did not know. You see a week later, the first man got a notice in the mail calling him to appear before the highest court in the land to answer for this debt. He knew he did not have the ability to pay it so he gathered all his friends to come with him and tell the court what a good person he had always tried to be, hoping the court would overlook the debt.
As the man and his friends got to court, he was told that he would not be allowed to present any character witnesses in his case since his "character" was not the issue before the court. The court was only interested in the debt he owed and how he planned to pay it.
All of a sudden a door behind the bench opened, the bailiff called everyone to stand, and in walked the Judge, but not just any Judge. Sitting in the seat of the highest authority in the land was the man who had only a week earlier offered to pay the entire debt, and was refused.
If you were the one on trial, what could you possibly say in your defense?
If you don't know Jesus, you are the first man and you will one day be on trial for your life.
How will you plead?
Jesus paid a debt He didn't owe, because you owe a debt you can not pay.
"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Phillipians 2:5-11
