Re: Employee/contractor

I am not entirely certain that I understand your position, but it sounds to me like you are an employee of a contractor.

If this is a meeting with the customer why would you NOT go?  I understand that in contracting we all have to draw a line in the sand now and then.  But the bottom line IS that they are your customer.

You have free will, no one will ever MAKE you do anything, but if you value the relationship with your client you will do all that you can within reason to ensure they are satisfied with the work you are doing.

If you choose to fight them all along the way, and refuse to do every little thing they ask of you, you will not survive long

On the other hand if you in fact have your own contract, the answer is just as simple, you need to make your customer happy.

Business is not, and has never been all about the quality of your work, but the relationships you can foster with the customers.  I can tell you this, though, if I had a contractor who would state, "I am a contractor, I am not required to go to any meetings"  I would make sure you never had to attend one of my meetings again.
