Every state is different.
The whole reason for all the subcontractor stuff is to insulate those at the top from the actions of the scum you deal with.
A thought. In some states you can just go after the money from the homeowner or plant operator. The idea is to get them to raise hell with the entity who owes you the money.
Best advice...go to the court house where the work was done and ask the clerk of the court. They can't give legal advice but they can point at doors and open books.
Also....find where your money is now. Save checks and get tag numbers. Figure out where the money is and who are the principals of the corporation. If they are not a corporation you can sue them personally. They have to be registered to do business in your state.
It's complicated and they know it. Keep a smiley face for them so they don't hide their money.
