In all of my years of splicing the Gilbert 3 piece is the only way to go, the PPC (commonly known as Piss Poor Connectors) cross thread to easily, same with the LRC connectors, If you tighten a PPC or LRC as per mfg. spec and you have to de-splice the connection for any reason you might as well throw it away and use a new connector, and if they have been in plant for several months you might as well just cut the cable and use a 3" extension because when you tighten down the backing nut it mushes the threads and half the time you can't even get the backing nut off, they are a waste of time & money, I have gone back on a location 4 years later with a gilbert system non shrink booted and they come rite apart, I agree it is best to change the pin connector out with a fresh one after 4 years but not have to hack your system up with a bunch of extensions.
