I'm about to buy a used stealth meter--how can I make sure it's not stolen?

I don't want to buy someone's stolen meter--I figure what comes around goes around. Is there any way I can check the serial # out to ensure it is ligit and make sure I can have it calibrated if I have to? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
