Re: Lowest Cost Leak Detection Equipt?

Do a search for the old Wavetek "Cookoo" unit. It is a rack-mounted unit that is in the headend. The unit transmits a "warrbeling" sound that is in the FM band. Your FM radios in the truck can usually pick up the leaks. The only problem is that there is no actual dBuV/M reading in truck for FCC documentation. Also be careful on level and frequency insertion as not to cause unnecessary beats in the forward.

Another low-cost alternative is to purchase an 2-meter FM amateur radio receiver or something that will receive (for example) 145.25 MHz (channel E on CATV network). Using a 1/4 or 1/2 wave magnetic mount antenna, it will yield any signal leakage with so-so accuracy. Be sure that you indeed have 145.25 MHz on your system and use a "test or sample" leak for calibration. This can also happen with a VHF scanner if it is properly utilized with other frequencies.

If you have any questions, please e-mail or call me.

Good luck,
