In Germany, not too long ago, it was also against the law to not report on your neighbors, if you knew they were Jews. In many cases laws are made by people for their own self interests. The founding fathers of this country committed an act (treason) against the law that was punishable by death, because of what they believed in. The laws and actions of this country generally serve to protect the rich and mega rich.
Sometimes you just have to do what is the "right" thing to do, regardless of the law.
