I went to my Grandfathers funeral on September27th, He was 91 years old and went in for hip surgery, he ended up getting a staff infection that settled in his artificial knee that turned to gangrene. It took 2 1/2 months to kill that man at 91. I am not writing this to anger ANY military man i just thought it was appropriate to pass on his last few words. My sister took a tape recorder into his room 2 weeks before he passed so all his grandkids would hear. He was a Lt.Colonel in the United States Army during WWII and fought in the South Pacific, the Honor Guard made a statement that said he was one of the last remaining officers who was actually on Iwo Jima during the raising of the flag!( He had several dif. pics) of the flag being raised from differant angles in a shoe box in his dresser drawer. One of the stories he told was how the Marines would storm the island and stir up the Japs until it looked like someone kicked a hornets nest and his men would have to go in and "calm" them down. This is in no way written to take sides or to say that one branch was any better than the other. I miss that man dearly and just wanted to pass on one of his stories. God Bless All who served!!!
