Cable/Telecom sales, especially door-to-door can be very lucrative. As with most sales jobs, as long as you have a good product and believe in it, your sales career will have a much better chance of succeeding. Comming from the install side will definitely be a benefit, as the other posters mentioned, you already know a great deal about the product, just keep in mind that you shouldn't be too technical in your presentation, that ultimately people will buy because they like you and could see that you were sincere.
The beauty of this industry is that it is technology based and thus is always evolving, so there are always going to be new and different products and promotions to sell, (spurred along in no small part by the telecom vs cable triple play wars!) TV and Internet are no longer luxury items, but necessities. A home phone is always a good backup too especially if there are children or elderly people in the household.
As MagnusXO mentioned the hours can be pretty good, although in the beginning I would suggest working your @ss off, and really hone your presentation, product knowledge and closing skills. Remember that if you can measure it, you can improve it. Take self improvement and continuing education serious(i.e. sales books and tapes), and write down your sales and life goals and keep them close to you, like in your wallet. Then find the top salespeople in your company and offer to buy them coffee or lunch and pick their brains.
And oh yeah, do some research on the company you work, because if you're going to sell with integrity, you want to know that you will be treated with it by your employer. This is a great forum to do some research. Good luck with the career change.
