It can also be used to phone DTV if there is a issue with satellite reception. I've been out on several Service calls and the customer said they were contacted by DTV and they said they got a message from the box. Its also used to prevent theft from either PPV or customers not having it at the correct address. They also use it to help repay for the "free installation". Backcharge you until they don't have to pay you.
